چکیده

Liquid-liquid dispersions are commonly used for separations and reaction systems, because the added interfacial area due to dispersion aids in mass transfer and chemical reaction rates. Transient coalescence experiments have been performed for a wide range of dispersed-phase fractions and impeller speeds. A similarity transformation of the experimental drop-size distribution is possible for most of the experiments. The drop-size-dependent coalescence frequency is obtained from an inverse problem procedure previously developed. Over the range of drop sizes encountered in our experiments, the coalescence frequency increases with increases in the size of the coalescing drops, the dispersed-phase fraction, and the impeller speed. For a dispersephase system of neutrally buoyant droplets of benzene/carbon tetrachloride in water, the coalescence frequency is K(v, v’)= 3. 72(10-3)41.42# 52(v1/2 + v””) as a function of dispersed-phase fraction, $, impeller speed, N2, and volumes of the coalescing droplets, v and v I . The results are compared with previous models for the coalescence frequency. Models predicting an eventual decrease in coalescence rates with drop size are disqualified unless this decrease occurs beyond the sizes observed in our experiments.

Coalescence of Rigid Droplets in a Stirred Dispersion-ii_ Band-limited Force Fluctuations

The coalescence of nearly rigid liquid droplets in a turbulent flow field is viewed as the drainage of a thin film of liquid under the action of a stochastic force representing the effect of turbulence. The force squeezing the drop pair is modelled as a correlated random function of time. The drops are assumed to coalesce once the film thickness becomes smaller than a critical thickness while t...

Multi-scale Simulations of Stirred Liquid--liquid Dispersions

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of liquid–liquid dispersions in a three-dimensional periodic domain have been performed by means of the lattice–Boltzmann method. The dispersion was agitated by a random force field such as to produce isotropic turbulence. The turbulence levels and its history were based on a fluid parcel in a turbulently stirred tank traversing the impeller swept region. The ...

Stagewise Modeling of Liquid-Liquid Extraction Column (RDC)

Stagewise forward mixing model considering coalescence and redispersion of drops was used to predict the performance of Rotating Disc Liquid-Liquid Extraction Contactors. Experimental data previously obtained in two RDC columns of 7.62cm diameter, 73.6cm height and 21.9cm diameter, 150cm height were used to evaluate the model predictions. Drop-side mass transfer coefficients were predicted appl...

Determination of Coalescence Frequencies in Liquid-liquid Dispersions: Effect of Drop Size Dependence

The size dependence of the drop coalescence frequency is investigated by measurement of transient drop size distributions in purely coalescing systems (with negligible drop break-up). A twopronged approach is employed to estimate the bivariate coalescence frequency function, using such experimental data. First, coalescence frequency expressions derived from mechanistic models of the relative mo...

A Numerical Model of Droplets Coalescence and Drainage in Fibrous Structures

In this work the model of droplets coalescence in liquid/liquid dispersions in flow through fibrous media is proposed. It is derived for the computation cell being a cubicoid that comprises a single mesh gap and equal volumes upstream and downstream, which size corresponds to a packing factor of the filter media. The numerical approach takes into account deposition of droplets on the fibres as ...
